Submission Guidelines

Vertex, The Online Journal for Adult and Workforce Education welcomes submissions on topics related to the field of adult workforce education. The following guidelines apply:

General guidelines:

  1. Materials must be submitted electronically, by email to brownpg@jmu.edu
  2. No hard copy paper submissions will be accepted.
  3. Documents should be saved as either a Word file (preferred) or as plain text.
  4. Manuscripts should be in 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font and be double spaced
  5. Manuscripts should be between 1,500 to 3,000 words, although we will publish articles up to 5,000 words. Longer manuscripts will be considered and may be serialized.
  6. Manuscripts should follow AP style.
  7. Do not justify the body of the manuscript.
  8. Subheadings should be 12 point, bold, and left justified, not centered.
  9. Author’s name, contact information, brief biographical information, and article title should appear on a cover sheet. Author’s name must not appear on any of the manuscript pages. Each page of the manuscript must include a header with the article title and page number.
  10. The author must provide the necessary permissions to use any copyrighted work.
  11. References must cite author and year in the body of the text. Full citations should follow AP style and appear at the end of the manuscript.

Guidelines for tables and figures:

  1. Be consistent throughout the manuscript. Use the same font and size for all text in tables and figures. Use the same font for subtitles. A larger size to distinguish subtitles is acceptable.
  2. All tables should be about the same size and shape.
  3. Identify all tables and figures below the table or figure. Number them consecutively (Table 1, Table 2, etc; Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) do not number related tables and figures as 1.A., 1.B., and so on.
  4. Keep tables and figures to a minimum.
  5. Contrast each line in a table (i.e. make one line gray and the next white).
  6. Text in tables and figures should be single spaced.
