Middle Education
Undergraduate, Pre-professional Program
The undergraduate pre-professional program in middle education is designed to provide the initial preparation for those individuals who wish to teach grades 6-8. This program provides the prerequisite course offerings and experiences that form the foundation for admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program. Completion of the M.A.T. program is required for a licensure recommendation from the Middle Education program at JMU.
Candidates should consult with advisors early during the first year or as soon thereafter as possible to obtain information concerning requirements for (1) general education, (2) the IDLS major, (3) the pre-professional middle education minor, and (4) admission to Teacher Education. Candidates should note that prerequisites and co-requisites are required for some of the courses included in the pre-professional Middle Education program. Exceptions to meeting those requirements must be approved by the department head and the dean of the College of Education.
