Mission and Description
The mission of the Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Education Department is to prepare teachers and other promoters of learning and good character who can impact students, their environment, and society in positive ways. The programs in the department are designed to prepare educators who are reflective and competent decision-makers. Educators who are reflective and competent decision-makers are able to choose from among known educational alternatives to maximize student learning in a variety of instructional situations. Departmental programs are primarily designed to prepare teacher candidates who can demonstrate the ability to promote high levels of achievement and skill development among middle and secondary school students (grades 6-12). In addition to the focus on achievement and skill development, faculty members are also committed to promoting character development, positive attitudes, and professional dispositions conducive to effective teaching at the middle and high school levels.
The Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Education Department is comprised of three programs. They are the Middle Education program, the Secondary Education program, and the Mathematics Education program. The first two programs have undergraduate (pre-professional) and graduate (professional) components while Mathematics Education is a graduate (professional preparation) program only. Satisfactory completion of the graduate programs will result in a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree or a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree.
The faculty and staff of the Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Department are dedicated to carrying out the missions of the department, the College of Education, and the university by providing good quality instruction, advice, and other services to students and other clients who seek assistance, knowledge, and experiences for improving their own conditions and those of learners they may encounter.
