Information for Current JMU Students

WELCOME to Exceptional Education, one of the most exciting and rewarding teaching fields!! We are pleased to see that you have an interest in this field. The JMU Exceptional Education Department offers a wide range of licensure programs and courses to meet your needs and interests and is dedicated to improving the education of individuals with exceptionalities. There are several programs to choose from at both the undergraduate and graduate level:

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS:

  1. Undergraduate, Pre-Professional Teaching Program in Special Education
  2. Undergraduate Non-Teaching Minor in Special Education
  3. Undergraduate Add-on Endorsement in K-12 English as a Second Language

GRADUATE PROGRAMS:

  1. Masters of Arts in Teaching: Special Education
  2. Masters of Education
  3. Graduate Add-on Endorsement in K-12 Gifted Education
  4. Graduate Add-on Endorsement in K-12 English as a Second Language

Our department prides itself on our focus on teaching excellence and preparing educators who are effective, energetic, resilient, and compassionate. We strive to develop a collegial atmosphere among students and faculty. If you are interested in becoming an Exceptional Educator, please contact the appropriate program coordinator. After speaking with a program coordinator, you may be able to experience one or more of the following opportunities.

  • Visit with a current JMU student enrolled in one of our programs
  • Visit a JMU Exceptional Education Class
  • Visit a public school classroom
